Elon Musk has announced the creation of xAI with the aim of “understanding the true nature of the universe.” Elon Musk has been teasing about his intention to develop a well-known chat-based AI chatbot for months.

On a recently launched website, xAI announced on Wednesday that Musk would serve as the team’s leader and that other team members had previously worked for top artificial intelligence firms like Google’s DeepMind, Microsoft Corp., Tesla Inc., and academic institutions like the University of Toronto. Musk contributed to the founding of OpenAI, a well-known AI startup and the creator of ChatGPT. However, since leaving the board in 2018, he has publicly criticized OpenAI, especially in light of the company’s intention to establish a for-profit division the following year. He’s said he thinks it’s “effectively controlled by Microsoft.” In OpenAI, Microsoft has made a nearly $13 billion investment. The website has 12 people listed as of Wednesday morning, including Musk, Both have ties to the University of Toronto, where assistant professor Jimmy Ba trained under Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence, and Christian Szegedy, a research scientist who worked on AI at Google for many years.

Musk has frequently criticized San Francisco, yet according to xAI’s website, the business is “actively recruiting experienced engineers and researchers to work in the Bay Area.” Up until now, Silicon Valley has served as the primary hub for AI development. A company called X.AI was founded in March by Musk and Jared Birchall, who manages Musk’s family office, according to Nevada state documents with the secretary of state.

The Financial Times reported in April that Musk and investors from Tesla and SpaceX were in discussions to establish an AI business. The newspaper reported that for the new business, the tycoon had purchased tens of thousands of CPUs from Nvidia Corp.

According to the website for xAI, Dan Hendricks, the organization’s director and a voice for those worried about the dangers posed by rapidly advancing AI, advises the business. It published a letter earlier this spring, signed by the CEOs of numerous top AI firms, including DeepMind and OpenAI, warning against the creation of potent AI models.

At the age of 52, Musk already runs six businesses, including xAI, Twitter, Neuralink, The Boring Company, Tesla, and SpaceX. The automaker Tesla claims in regulatory papers that it is “rapidly focusing on products and services based on artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomy.” Inviting users to “join us in building the future of artificial intelligence,” Tesla’s website showcases a number of items, including the “Tesla Bot” or “Optimus,” a humanoid robot that is driven by AI, as well as AI interface chips that will power Tesla’s self-driving software.

As his expanding empire overlaps with itself, Musk has a lengthy history of using engineers from one firm to assist another. He holds the position of Vice President of Material Engineering at both Tesla and SpaceX, for instance, while Tesla workers “voluntarily” joined Twitter when Musk paid $44 billion for the social media platform in October. On its website, xAI claims to be a “separate company” from x Corp, the organization into which Elon Musk merged Twitter earlier this year. However, the website also states that xAI will “work in collaboration with x (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies.”

Despite his engagement with AI, Musk has voiced serious reservations about the field. He was a member of a group of billionaire researchers and business titans who demanded that the development of potent AI models come to an end back in March.
